Interview with GBH
Here's a pretty hip interview with
one of the most influential punk bands to come out of the United Kingdom since the Sex Pistols. HIP magazine
found them to be pretty hip guys so
we asked them a couple of questions when we visited them in the Long Beach hotel they were staying in.
GBH is:
Vocals: Colin "Col" Abranhal
Guitar: Colin "Jock" Blyth
Bass: Ross Lomas
Drums: Kai
HIP: Okay, first of all let me tell you guys that you put on a great show last night at Fender's (Ballroom). I'll get straight to the questions. To start off with, what's the
name of your new drummer?
COLIN: Kai is our newest drummer.
HIP:
How long has he been with you
guys, how long has he been with GBH?
COLIN:
Oh, it's been about........oh, two years now.
HIP:Two years? That's not so new then, I guess. It's seems like such a short time since your last guy who was on drums. So about how long has the band GBH been playing music together?
COLIN:
The band's been together about eight years.
HIP:
We were going to ask you guys what GBH stood for but someone answered that for us last night (Grievous Bodily Harm), so now we'll just go on to the next question: What bands had the most influence on GBH when you guys first started?
COLIN:
The bands that've had the most influence on GBH are Discharge, The Cramps, and The Sex Pistols...but we already had the band going when Discharge started singin'.
They (Discharge) were really different, they
were more energetic.
HIP:
I'm sure you guys have heard their new stuff, right? What do you think about (Discharge's) current tunes?
COLIN:
It's a good record but it's not Discharge. It's like if Led Zeppelin or someone like that had released it, it would be classic. They gave us our break though, that's how we got signed up. They're all good friends of ours.
HIP:
I'm wondering if any of the band members in GBH ever been in any other bands, or is GBH the first major band for all you guys?
COLIN:
Only Kai, he was in a German band,....he's from Hamburg. We (GBH) were on tour there when we met him. His band was called Napalm. That's where we first met him.
(At this time and as if on cue or something, there's a knock on the hotel room door. Colin gets up from the bed he was so comfortably sitting on and answers the door. Speak of the devil; in come Kai, Ross, and a few other hangers on. It looks like they're just returning from the corner liquor store)
HIP:
How many times is this for you in the United States as of now?
COLIN:
This is the fifth time we've come to the states.
HIP:
I'm sure you guys have probably traveled a lot since you first started touring. What's your favorite town?
COLIN:
They're all different but I like New York and Cleveland.
HIP:
Who's your favorite U.S. band? Or do you even have a favorite one?
ROSS:
Bad Brains!!
(Everyone in the room cheers)
COLIN:
Bad Brains, Breakouts, and Agnostic Front.
HIP:
Who writes your songs? Who's the songwriter in GBH?
COLIN:
We all do (the songwriting).
HIP:
Where do you get some of the ideas for your songs?
COLIN:
Living.
HIP:
I heard that you guys were gonna try to play in Australia, have you done that yet?
COLIN:
Not yet, we haven't. We need someone over there to arrange it for us, but we're going to be playing in Brazil (South America) next year.
HIP:
How's your latest album doing, "No Need To Panic"?
COLIN:
"No Need To Panic" is doing good.
HIP:
That's great, we listen to it all the time. When is your next release due out for?
COLIN:
We've got a demo tape of three new songs, it's gonna be a four track. It should be out by early next year, early 1988.
HIP:
What about home sweet home, how is the punk scene doing in Great Britain now? Is it still thriving?
COLIN:
It's still good. It goes in waves. Sometimes there'll be three or four gigs in a month, then it's like no gigs for two months and you never see anyone you know.
HIP: That's good, we've got to visit one of these days...Whoa, Ross! What happened to your arm?
(talking to Ross after suddenly noticing he has his arm in a short cast)
ROSS:
I dived over a fence, in Santa Monica.
COLIN:
Back at Santa Monica there's a chain link fence and he dived over it and broke his elbow.
HIP:
Fuck, that must've hurt! I've never heard of anyone breaking their elbow before. Besides the elbow healing, what do you see in the future for GBH?
COLIN:
(laughter) Uh,...GBH land, GBH TV,..our own cable network,....GBH's Big Boy.
HIP:
Okay, thanks for your time and good luck to you guys.
COLIN:
Yeah, thanks to you too.
