Interview with cEvin Key (of Skinny Puppy fame)
Interview with cEvin Key
(of Skinny Puppy fame)

HIP: How's everything at the Skinny Puppy camp?
Officially Skinny Puppy has not existed since June 12 1995. I did make Brap volume three and four after that so I guess it exists in other forms. There are a lot of live recordings I want to go through and compile an LP. So in some sense there is also a future. I communicate peacefully with Ogre, (have many times been in the studio writing a song which is undoubtedly a new Skinny Puppy track and have felt a desire to call him). We are always being offered to perform still, (in Europe and USA) even though the band does not exist. Some of the offers are getting very large surprisingly. Still I feel we are both finding ourselves and developing. There isn't a day when I feel I am not learning something new and useful to my music.
HIP: On the complete video package (video release l996) that was released here in the states, are they the original videos that were banned in Canada and are they included in this archive collect- ion?
I haven't seen the package video collection. I do not own a copy. As far as I know there is not a releasable version of Warlock in its three forms. Mostly all are based on the same theme, but different edits. I am not sure if this collection of explicit movie scenes censored by the MPAA could ever be resanctioned.
HIP: Is there a difference in fanbase between U.S. and Canada?
Puppy fans are more devoted in the US it seems. Skinny Puppy was way out of the commercial eye in most places in Canada, whereas LA or NY were swallowing it up. Toronto was a hugely supportive city for Skinny Puppys career.
HIP: I want to ask a question about a story concerning the band that really hasn't gotten attention in music magazines last year. I read in Alternative Press (Oct. 97 issue) that there was an actual conspiracy subsequent to the attack on Genesis P. Orridge and Nivek Ogre for managing a website called "The Process", and the original followers with the cult of the same name are responsible somehow indirectly with Dwayne Goettel's death. Have you read the article or do you have first hand knowledge on this?
I somehow doubt this is anything more than just a hyped out event. Tragedies did unfold on all of us in a almost comical and ridiculous way. Earthquakes, fires ,floods, personal traumas, deaths, injuries requiring hospital, loss of band, girlfriend breakups, drug addictions, mental breakdowns, loss of friends, all in the course of a LP . . . The process set it self to play us out.
HIP: Exactly how did American Records exploit the band's last recording together with Dwayne on "The Process?"
I feel that the methods used by all to make this LP were the wrong ones. It shows on the LP. The record company was not what Skinny Puppy needed at that point in our careers. We would have been the smartest to stick with Capitol Records who supported our creativity and our way of making our records. This attitude shows with other Capitol related artists such as Beastie Boys.
HIP: What U.S. label are Skinny Puppy on now?
The last material was released on Nettwerk Productions which I believe now is reaffiliated with Capitol EMI for distribution, (yeah !) So Skinny Puppy will be available through a wider area. Officially Nettwerk Canada.
HIP: Did the remaining members agree on the making of Remix-Dystemper?
Sure. Nettwerk has wanted to do it for years. I was a bit disappointed that Trent (Reznor) backed down on doing Digit.
HIP: Any new remix videos for the Remix-Dystemper album?
Good question . . .
HIP: Skinny Puppy tracks in the works for release?
Hopefully in the future we will have some fun doing a track and see. Only time will tell, keep your fingers crossed.
HIP: Any words to part with?
