Interview with frontwoman Michellane of
Three Women in Black
Three Women in Black

HIP: When did you guys form?
We started about September of last year.
HIP: What are your influences, and whom would you say you sound like?
We really don't sound like anyone. We listen to New Model Army, D.O.A, and old X. It's just a mixture of all that thrown in. We really don't sound like just one of them but kind of, you know, has a little influence from each one.
HIP: Do your influences show on your songs?
Yes, I would think so, a little bit.
HIP: How would you describe your music?
Basically, our influences drive us to what we write. You know, like I said, New Model Army, Iggy Pop, etcetera. There's a couple of sixties bands we like. But when we think of sixties punk we think of bands like The Who, you know, before they were pushed into this corporation scheme of selling records.
HIP: What clubs have you guys played?
We've done The Anti-Club, Coconut Teaszer, Zombie Zoo, and others.
HIP: So you guys have been around for?
Actually, as a band, since about November.
HIP: So you guys are kind of new.
Yeah, very new. That's why nobody wants to book us. They say, "Oh, nobody's ever heard of you".
HIP: You guys have any upcoming gigs?
Yeah, we're gonna do Zombie Zoo at their new location on June 25. We did a great show about three weeks ago in Phoenix with the Jerks and The Hangmen, and that was real fun because it was an all ages show. If you were 21 you were pretty old for the crowd. The crowd was aged from 13 to 17, it was great. They were a lot more fun to play to than the over 21 crowd. I guess it's because the young crowd is not so pretentious on what they should like, and what they shouldn't like. They're just more open, and their energy is just so... you know. The time we started they were moving and we're moving. When you're playing in front of a crowd that's just standing there it's really hard to move.
HIP: About your name, is there any meaning behind it?
No, no, it's just a name. We got it out of a 1950's 25th century pocket mystery book type collection we saw through one day when we were looking for a name, and we said "That's it, that's what we'll do!" It was just silly enough for us.
HIP: So, to inform the public, the line-up does not literally consist of three women in black.
No, no, but that's what everybody thinks though. That's the best thing about it, you know? It's like "I'm gonna go out and see Three Women in Black," and if you heard that it'll be like "You're going where and listen to what?"
HIP: So the line up is...?
Michellane on vocals and guitar, and Scott on lead guitar. Rob on bass and Nick on drums.
HIP: Do you have any favorite local bands?
Yeah! Favorite will probably be, like on the top of the list would be Haunted Garage. Those guys are really great. Have you seen them?
HIP: No, unfortunately.
You ought to see them. They're fun. We also like Lazy Cowgirls and Pigmy Love Circus.
